Unable to pay your tax bills?

VAT update as at September 2020

The 500,000 businesses who deferred their VAT bills till March 2021 will be able to repay them in eleven smaller interest-free instalments, instead of one lump sum.

VAT cut extension for for hospitality and tourism sectors

The worst hit industries during the pandemic have been offered an extension of the temporary reduction of VAT rates from 20% to 5% until 31 March 2021, rather than 13 January.

VAT refunds and reclaims will be paid by the government as normal.

Help to pay your income tax if you are self employed

Self employed people who have income tax liabilities to pay in January 2021, these can be paid in 12 monthly instalments rather than one lump sum to help with cash flow.

It is unclear currently if this includes payment on account liabilities, although likely.

Help to pay your tax bill 

Those who are unable to pay their tax bills due to the coronavirus can discuss with HMRC via the helpline: 

  • An instalment payment arrangement

  •  Suspending debt collection proceedings

  • Cancelling penalties and interest where you have administrative difficulties contacting or paying HMRC immediately.

The HMRC coronavirus helpline is 0800 024 1222.

Opening hours for the helpline will be 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday only.

The helpline will not be available on Bank Holidays.
