HMRC have issued me with an EORI number, why do I need it?

Are you a VAT registered business? If so, have you received a letter from HMRC allocating you an EORI number?

HMRC is automatically providing 88,000 UK VAT registered businesses with economic operator registration and identification (EORI) numbers to assist with trade with the EU should the UK leave with no-deal. Some 72,000 UK companies have already registered for EORI numbers but now HMRC have taken the next step and issued all UK VAT registered businesses with their own unique EORI number to support trade activities if or when the UK leaves the EU.  Those UK companies that are not VAT registered, will need to apply manually to HMRC.

What is an EORI number?

EORI numbers are a unique ID allocated to businesses that enable them to be identified by Customs authorities when doing business with other traders.  If a UK business do not have an EORI number after the UK leaves the European bloc, they will be unable to continue to trade with EU member states. Traders also need to decide whether to apply for transitional simplified procedures to make it easier to import goods from the EU. Introduced from 1 July 2009, the EORI number replaced the Traders Union Reference Number System, and essentially is a method for tracking products being traded to and from the EU so shipments, and there origins, can be easily identified by customs. The EORI number acts as a means of providing security and statistics in international trade and is used by customs authorities when exchanging information between themselves and with government departments.

How do I apply for an EORI number, if I didn't receive one?

The good news is that the simple application process and the quick turnaround for allocation of an EORI number is very straightforward.

Applications are handled by HMRC. All that is required by you is the completion of a simple form; either one for VAT registered applicants,  a non VAT registered from if exporting or a non VAT registered form if importing. Once the form is completed, it can take up to 3 working days to process by HMRC, who will email you your own unique EORI number.

Your EORI number is valid irrespective of how many transactions you undertake in the import and export of goods. Please remember to apply for an EORI number for every European country that you plan to export or import goods to. Remember, if you are a VAT registered business in the UK, HMRC are allocating you with an EORI number automatically so you don't need to do anything.

If you are not VAT registered it’s advisable to apply for your EORI number after your first shipment has been dispatched as you will need carrier and tracking information for the application. For the latest news on EORI from HMRC read more here.
